It is always great to attend a board game show and meet people who share the same passion for the hobby. It is even better when the show is held in your home country. Words can't really describe the amazing feeling of attending the 1st Athens Tabletop Convention in Athens, Greece.
Although it was the first convention of its kind in Greece, we have only good things to tell you about it. Thousands of board gamers and not only visited the Tae Kwo Do Stadium to watch and play board games or even participate in tournaments. Age of Rome and Restart were once again warmly received by the Greek audience, and the biggest dilemma for visitors was whether they'd buy the Greek or English version. The tables were always full and we would like to thank everyone who tried the game and gave us such positive feedback. Some more than others were extremely curious about Restart and how its different mechanics are combined. We're sorry guys, but we couldn't reveal more.
With some of you, we even had the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee at the Stavros Niarchos Park, located just a few hundred meters from the convention site. The 360-degree view from the rooftop garden, called the Lighthouse, allows you to see the Parthenon on one side and the island of Poros on the other. For those of you visiting the exhibition next year, we highly recommend a walk in the park and a refreshment at the Lighthouse. And while you are there, be sure to visit the National Library of Greece, not only for its amazing files of books, comix and magazines, but also for its great collection of board games. You might even find a copy of Age of Rome and try it out.
As expected, the convention was covered by the media and many people involved in the board game community. We would like to thank some of those people who sacrificed their personal time and resources to promote board games. Vangelis from Epitrapaizoume covered the convention with a really cool video. Giannis from Board Gaming 365 and Dimitris from House of Nerds did a great potpourri of interviews. Tassos from The Geek Detective had some really tough questions for us. If you haven't had a chance to watch these videos yet, take some time and enjoy them, they will give you a good idea of the fun and excitement we had at the convention.
Also, we want to congratulate some great groups of people who try to promote the board game hobby every day with their own actions. The Greek Meeple Gang is a great group of board game enthusiasts who get together and play board games, inviting new members to join and teaching them about this amazing hobby. The Game A Lot Guild is a society in the city of Volos that promotes board games in any way possible; we would like to thank them especially for the love they showed for Age of Rome, not only at the Athens Tabletop Convention, but also at many other events. Esperos is one of the oldest board game clubs in Athens, meeting them was a great opportunity to talk about games, playtesting sessions and a lot of thoughts that can promote the hobby.
Finally, we would like to thank all the wonderful people who visited our booth and met with us! It is always refreshing to talk to people who share the same passion. Until next time!
