May 19, 2025That's How Games Should Be
This article is quite different from the others. This is something that we have realized after four years of hard work in board game design and publishing. We believe that now is the right time to share it with you and we hope you find it useful.
As some of you may know, when we created Age of Rome, we were inexperienced creators diving into uncharted territory. Our creativity was driven by our love for board games and the fun and passion we experienced while playing. It was only natural that we came up with a game that incorporated all of these elements. Fun, interaction, quick thinking, and tactics are the key elements of Age of Rome.
Following the success of Age of Rome, we delved deeper into the vast world of board games. We began studying more mechanics and mathematical equations and experimenting with their implementation in games. We read tons of books and articles about how to balance a game to be fair and give players a lot of freedom, as well as how to keep them interested after they learn the mechanics so they won't get bored easily. I have to say that all of this information is amazing. It has opened our minds to the possibilities of game design. On the other hand, they distracted us from the main goal, which is probably the most important.
So, while we were working on Restart, we got so caught up in creating these smart and innovative game mechanics that we totally overlooked the most important aspect of a board game. Fun! While we were thinking hard and trying to balance the game design to be just and fair, we forgot to add fun somewhere along the way. And what's the point of creating and playing a game that isn't fun? That's exactly what all of you have managed to make us think and release with your feedback about Restart.
You see, when we created the first version of Restart, we had in mind a complex, highly intelligent puzzle for the players to solve. Which, by the way, is sometimes really interesting in a game. However, while focusing on the puzzle, we forgot to consider whether it was fun. Well, as they say, it's never too late. After redesigning it extensively, we are now confident that the second version of Restart offers the full package. It has fun, excitement, player interaction, puzzles, tactics, and quick thinking, all of which the player can choose to experience. That's how games should be. At the end of the day, we play games to have fun and escape our daily routines.
