A New Name for Restart

A development we certainly didn’t expect… Restart is getting a new name. Last month, we were contacted by a company informing us that they had registered the name “Restart” and asking us to change the name of our game. This came as quite a surprise to us. We had announced the name Restart long before, including as part of our crowdfunding campaign, and we honestly never expected that we would need to register such a general word ourselves. However, after more than a year, the name was registered by another company, despite the fact that we had already publicly announced our game and launched our crowdfunding campaign under that name. After considering our options, we decided that the best course of action was to make the change and avoid any potential problems further down the road. So, from now on, our game will be called: Restart Your Future.

We do want to give credit where credit is due. The company behind the other game did the right thing by contacting us first, before taking any legal action, and gave us the opportunity to resolve the matter without creating unnecessary legal complications. The communication between us was smooth and in the end, we found a solution that allowed everyone to move forward. In all honesty, once the situation arose, changing the name was ultimately the only realistic path for us. That said, we can’t hide the fact that the whole situation left us with a somewhat bitter feeling. Our usual process when choosing a game name is fairly straightforward. We check BoardGameGeek (BGG) to see whether a game with the name we have in mind already exists. If we don’t find anything there, we move forward with the development of the cover, announce the name on our social media channels, and add the game to BGG. There isn’t exactly another universal database that we can simply check when coming up with a name for a board game.

This entire situation happened in August, right in the middle of the summer holidays, when all of our collaborators and partners were away from the office; and, of course, so were we. Having to make important decisions about the future of the game, while key people were unavailable and everyone was supposed to be taking a break, was certainly not ideal. Unfortunately, changing the name at this stage also means that we have had to make a number of changes to graphics, files, and other production materials that had already been prepared. Because of this, we expect that the situation may result in approximately one month of additional time being added to the overall delivery schedule. We don’t want to hide that from you. It’s a delay we certainly didn’t plan for, and one that we would have preferred to avoid. However, we are already working hard to recover as much of that time as possible and get back on track with the schedule we originally planned.

Most importantly, the game itself remains exactly the same. The development, production and everything you have been waiting for continue as planned. The only thing that has changed is the name. So, goodbye Restart and… welcome Restart Your Future. It may take a little while for the new name to appear everywhere, as we work through all the necessary updates, but from now on, this is the name you’ll be seeing more and more.
