A Game Design Workshop at LUDO
August 10, 2026From Ideas to Games
One of the most rewarding parts of creating games is seeing an idea come to life in someone else’s hands. This is exactly the experience Teetotum had at LUDO while guiding a group of young people through their own game design journey. It was wonderful to see them take their first ideas and, with a little guidance and encouragement, turn them into something tangible and playable. Throughout the workshop, we had the opportunity to watch their creativity, imagination, and enthusiasm grow as they explored what it means to create a game from scratch.
The process began by dividing the participants into smaller groups, with each team coming up with its own initial game idea. They discussed their concepts together, exploring the theme, objective, mechanics, and overall experience they wanted their game to offer. Our role was to guide the discussions, ask questions, provide suggestions, and help the teams think about how their ideas could work as actual games. Rather than giving them ready-made solutions, we encouraged them to experiment and make their own decisions, helping each group shape its concept while keeping their original vision at the centre of the process.
Once the first ideas were established, the teams began creating their initial game versions. We were amazed by how creatively they approached the challenge. They didn't just focus on the rules and mechanics, but also created graphic elements, designed components, and added small details that gave each game its own character. After the first versions were ready, we moved on to playtesting. By playing the games ourselves, we were able to identify parts that weren't working as smoothly as expected and suggest changes to improve the overall experience. Some rules were adjusted, some mechanics were refined, and certain elements were redesigned. This allowed the participants to experience first-hand one of the most important parts of game design: testing, learning, and improving through iteration.
The final step was sharing their creations with the local community. The participants had the chance to see their games placed on the table and played by volunteers, giving them a completely different perspective on what they had created. They could observe how people interacted with their games, hear their feedback, and see their ideas become a real experience for others. In this way, they experienced the complete journey of creating a game - from the first idea and teamwork, through prototyping and playtesting, all the way to presenting the final creation to real players. For us at Teetotum, it was a truly special experience and a great reminder of how exciting game design can be when creativity, collaboration, and guidance come together.
